Omuhwera, meaning “abundant” or “plentiful”, is a standout coffee from the Rwenzori Mountains region of Uganda. Known as the “Mountains of the Moon”, this range borders the Democratic Republic of the Congo and offers fertile volcanic soils, cool temperatures, and consistent rainfall, ideal conditions for growing high-quality Arabica coffee.
The coffee is cultivated by smallholder farmers working on family plots averaging 1-2 hectares. These farmers handpick only the ripest cherries, which are floated and carefully sorted before being dried on raised beds at Kirugu Station.
The natural processing method includes a 12-15 hour fermentation and a slow, meticulous drying period of 25-28 days to develop complex fruit and chocolate notes while preserving a creamy mouthfeel.
Historically, coffee from this region was sold as “Drugar”, a home-processed Arabica of inconsistent quality. Recent investments in centralised receiving stations and wet mills have transformed the region’s coffee into traceable, specialty-grade lots. This shift has improved quality, increased farmer incomes, and enhanced Uganda’s presence in the global specialty coffee market.
Stancoff supports farmers with input loans, off-season financing, and agroforestry programmes that encourage reforestation and climate resilience. By maintaining transparent supply chains and investing in infrastructure, they help improve both coffee quality and farmer livelihoods while protecting the region’s rich biodiversity.
